It's humane by krapnek It's humane by krapnek
Vive la France.
Paris. Nov 1st, 2005.
He was laying there for 4 days and nobody cared. Even I didn't care.
It is humane to walk past the bum. If he even was one. I never stopped to ask.
Is it in our nature to feel compassion only towards ourselves?

the shot itself is good, no doubt. What i'm not getting here after reading all the comments is whether you think it's ok to have walked past him for 4 days and done nothing? And repeating this humane line makes no sense. I think you mean human...but even then that would be wrong. I wouldn't be able to stand myself if i didn't check on him...and for any of you who thinks it's ok to walk on by needs to put yourselves in his shoes.
It's not a 'style' to be uncaring...it's your choice.

I'm delighted that you're not one of us. I still have ethical issues when I see this photo. We'll never know what happened to him.

It's human, but not humane...

Once I saw a person lying motionless on the street in London. I only stopped for half a step and then hurried to follow my family :/
It's so incomprehensible, my own actions more than homelessness.

Good photo that makes you think. Framing works well to show how carelessly the people hurry by. And those leafs/sheets of paper add an extra touch of grimyness and neglect to the way he lies on the street.

Though I've been raised to be friendly and caring, I still don't always act like one.
It's hard to look around you and see the bad things. It's even harder to do something about them.
Thank you.

Oh, I wish I could help him! It's so sad that there still are so many homeless people... Why use money on war, when we could use them on helping the weak people? I don't get it..

Nice perspective :) I like it in black/white, I don't think it would have worked if it was in colours.

Still love your work :)

Homeless people need to learn how to spit oil, then the world governments would care about them, pamper them even.

Humanity is something I greatly dislike so I am in front of my computer lol... Humans are cruel sadistic creatures, and find no time in helping the needs of others unless they are going to gain something from it.

Totta. Pahinta on huomata itsessään nuo välinpitämättömyyden piirteet. Inhimillistähän se on, mutta niin julmaa.
Kiitos.

It took me a few days to respond to this one, not because I don't care, but because this photo raises a lot of questions in oneself. 10 or even 5 years ago I would have cried out that I was different, that I care... but now ... I don't know, I see myself not care a lot lately. Sometimes I can't feel compassion for someone that cries, that is hurt, that suffers. Do we grow colder with age? With experience? Does the world we live in numb our compassion? Are we doing it to protect our fragile souls or don't we really care at all. A lot to think about, would be somethign to spend an evening on discussing with a bottle of wine or two ... but then again, how could we sit in the warm drinking wine and discussing those unfortunate when they don't have food and drink ?? How can we smile, how can we laugh?? we should not, if we care...or should we ?

He was beautiful too. A melancholic example of what life sometimes is.
But what I did? I walked pats him for many days and on the fourth day I made him an object of my art.
Thank you.

its a shame. i dont believe it should be like that... i think what makes one person that bit "better" (cant think of a diff word) than the next is to override nature/instinct and do the right thing.
people are too selfish and the worlds gone mad. im in england and its turned itself into a nanny state. they did an experiment where they put a 13yr old girl at the side of the street alone acting obviously distressed and the only people (of which there were very few) that approached her were couples and women, they asked the men that walked past why they didnt stop and they said they daren't cause they'd be labled a paedophile or something...
grrr the world/human race has gone mad.

youre welcome btw xxx

Oh my god, how horrible. So he died on the open street and even no policeman stopped by to see, if he is drunk or dead? That is just horrible.
It's strange how humans are sometimes. Me for example drove with my car one day in winter and besides the street lay a bum in the grass and I could hardly say if he was alive or frozen. I didn't stop to look. I even didn't call the police. I am strange, too. I am horrible, too... damn.
